Popular demand has led to Kilkenny’s Lighthouse Dementia Cafe to run twice a month.
According to Donna O’Donoghue, the Cafe co-ordinator and the SOS Kilkenny Day Service Manager for Older Persons, “The idea for The Lighthouse Cafe developed within SOS Kilkenny when we saw the rapid progression and impact of dementia on the people we support. We recognised that aging and age-related conditions impact on us all in the same way and we say an opportunity to create a space that benefits not only the people we support but our colleagues, our families, our neighbours and our local community”.
And now, due to the demand for the services in the area, the Café now runs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the Month. As the partner of one cafe’s visitors put it, “it is very comforting to be with people who chat & discuss, in a very friendly way various issues with Dementia. Especially for the Carers who are dealing with the memory loss all the time. It’s so useful to get help & guidance where we can talk to experts”.
If you or a loved one would be interested in attending the The Lighthouse Café, it takes place on the first and third Tuesday of every month and is located on the ground floor of The Lighthouse, Walkinslough Court, Walkin St. Kilkenny, R95HX7K. For more information contact Donna O’Donoghue on 087 6022267 or email dodonoghue@soskilkenny.com
The Cafes are an inclusive support for people living with dementia and also offer support for carers of those living with dementia in Ireland.
