Course Overview
The Communication Partner Training workshop provides an in-depth exploration of how dementia affects communication and how professionals can adapt their approach to maintain understanding and connection.
Through practical examples and guided discussion, participants learn to identify communication barriers and explore ways to overcome them using empathy, active listening, and tailored interaction techniques. The course also focuses on supporting autonomy and decision-making for the person with dementia, reinforcing the importance of advocacy and partnership in care.
Participants will leave with greater confidence and a range of tools they can use immediately to enhance everyday communication in both clinical and home care settings.
About the Topic
People living with dementia experiences change in their ability to communicate. The specific effects vary depending on the stage and type of dementia. Caregivers and supporters play a crucial role in understanding the person’s wishes and advocating both with and for them. To help individuals communicate as effectively as possible, it’s important to recognise the nature and extent of their communication difficulties and to tailor support to their unique needs.
This course is developed and delivered by Dr. Suzanna Dooley a speech and language therapist and leading specialist in dementia communication for all healthcare professionals, nurses, and other clinical healthcare staff. Suzanna is also an S&L Therapy Researcher in Trinity College.

Who is it for?
This course is intended for anyone who supports or communicates with people living with dementia. It is particularly suitable for nurses, healthcare assistants, allied health professionals, activity coordinators, and family carers who wish to strengthen their communication approach and provide more effective support.
No prior experience or specialist knowledge is required, making it accessible to professionals and carers in all dementia care settings.

Dr. Suzanna Dooley
Speech and Language Therapist | Dementia Communication Specialist | Researcher at Trinity College Dublin
Dr. Suzanna Dooley is an experienced clinician, researcher, and educator specialising in communication and dementia. She has worked extensively with individuals and families affected by dementia, developing training and therapeutic frameworks to support communication, understanding, and emotional connection.
As a CORU-Registered Speech and Language Therapy Therapist and Researcher at Trinity College Dublin, Dr. Dooley contributes to national and international projects focused on communication interventions and carer education. Her teaching style is person-centred, empathetic, and grounded in real-world practice, ensuring participants leave the course with confidence and actionable skills.
