This course gives an understanding of the Non-Cognitive Symptoms of Dementia (NCSD), and how non-pharmacological approaches can support the development of meaningful interpersonal relationships between carer and client.

Suitable for: Healthcare assistants, carers, activity coordinators, and care partners to those living with dementia.

This half day course will cover:

  • What do we mean by BPSD, Responsive Behaviours/Non-Cognitive Symptoms and Sundowning?
  • Understanding the ‘question’ / expression of need and assessing underlying causes
  • Using non-pharmaceutical approaches to reduce symptoms and increase connection
  • Safety measures
  • The impact on the carer
  • Restoring joy to a challenging dynamic

Please note: This workshop does not provide any medical training in regards to pharmaceutical approaches and is not intended to replace the assessment or opinions of medical professionals in regards to treatment or care. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention in relation to physical escalation is not covered, as this should be delivered through in-person training due to safety techniques involved. This course is designed to provide an understanding of the non-cognitive symptoms of dementia, how non-pharmacological approaches can support the development of meaningful interpersonal relationships between carer and client, as well as identification of symptoms and reduction of likelihood.

Course Tutor: Danielle Keogh has 10 years’ experience in the field of dementia care. She is a trained HCA with Distinctions in all modules, and has a QQI Level 8 qualification in Dementia and Everyday Ethics from DCU, specialising in case studies of those presenting with responsive behaviours/NCSD. She also has a Degree in Digital Media, and a Level 8 Professional Diploma in Digital Leadership.
